What Items Can a Junk Removal Company Take?
A Complete Guide to What Junk Removal Companies Accept
One of the most common questions we hear at Robert Z Disposal is: "Can you take this?" After over 40 years of serving Lynn, MA and the North Shore, the short answer is usually yes. But it helps to know exactly what's on the list — and the few exceptions — before your pickup day.
Common Items We Take
Our crews handle a wide range of household, commercial, and construction-related items every day. Here are some of the most common things we remove:
- Furniture: Sofas, recliners, mattresses, bed frames, dressers, desks, dining tables, chairs, bookshelves, and entertainment centers.
- Appliances: Refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, microwaves, stoves, window AC units, and water heaters.
- Electronics: TVs, computer monitors, desktop towers, printers, stereo equipment, and old gaming consoles.
- Yard waste: Branches, brush, leaves, sod, dirt, and fencing materials.
- Construction debris: Drywall, lumber, tile, carpeting, cabinetry, and renovation waste.
- General clutter: Boxes, old clothing, toys, sporting equipment, tools, and miscellaneous household items.
What We Donate
At Robert Z Disposal, we believe in giving items a second life whenever possible. Gently used furniture, working appliances, clothing in good condition, and household goods are sorted and delivered to local donation centers and charities across the North Shore. When you hire us, you can feel good knowing your unwanted items might help someone in the community.
What We Recycle
Recycling is a core part of our process. Metals, electronics, cardboard, certain plastics, and scrap materials are separated and sent to appropriate recycling facilities. We work hard to keep as much material out of the landfill as possible — it's better for the environment and better for Massachusetts.
Items We Can't Take
There are a few categories of items that junk removal companies — including us — are not permitted to haul due to safety and environmental regulations:
- Hazardous waste: Chemicals, solvents, pesticides, and biohazard materials.
- Paint: Liquid paint cans (dried-out paint cans are usually fine).
- Propane tanks: Full or partially full tanks require special handling.
- Motor oil and automotive fluids: These need to go to a designated drop-off facility.
- Asbestos-containing materials: These require specialized abatement contractors.
Alternatives for Restricted Items
If you have items we can't take, don't worry. Many towns on the North Shore — including Lynn, Salem, Peabody, and Marblehead — offer hazardous waste collection days. Your local transfer station can also accept paint, motor oil, and propane tanks. We're always happy to point you in the right direction.
