What Happens to Your Junk After We Pick It Up

The Journey Your Junk Takes After Pickup

When our truck pulls away from your driveway, your job is done — but ours is just getting started. At Robert Z Disposal, we take responsible disposal seriously. Here's what actually happens to your items after we haul them away.

Step 1: Sorting

After each pickup, our crew sorts the items into categories: donatable, recyclable, and disposable. This sorting process happens before anything reaches a landfill. We estimate that roughly 40-60% of what we haul gets diverted from the dump through donations and recycling.

Step 2: Donations

Furniture in good condition, working appliances, clean clothing, and usable household goods are delivered to local donation centers and charities across the North Shore. Your old couch might end up in a family's first apartment. That working washing machine could go to someone who really needs it.

Step 3: Recycling

Metals from appliances and construction materials go to scrap yards. Electronics are sent to certified e-waste recyclers who extract valuable components. Cardboard, certain plastics, and wood are processed at recycling facilities. We work with multiple partners to make sure recyclable materials end up in the right place.

Step 4: Responsible Disposal

Items that can't be donated or recycled are taken to licensed disposal facilities. We follow all Massachusetts regulations for waste disposal, including special handling requirements for items like refrigerators (Freon recovery) and electronics.
