Moving Day Junk Removal: What to Toss Before You Pack
Lighten Your Load Before Moving Day
Moving is stressful enough without hauling boxes of stuff you don't need to your new place. Every item you move costs money — whether you're paying movers by the hour or renting a truck by size. The smartest move you can make before moving day is getting rid of what you don't need.
Start Early — At Least 4 Weeks Out
Don't wait until the week before your move to start sorting. Give yourself at least a month to go through each room. Tackle one area per weekend and you'll be amazed at how much lighter your load becomes.
The One-Year Rule
If you haven't used it, worn it, or thought about it in the past year, it's time to let it go. This applies to clothing, kitchen gadgets, books, decorations, and that exercise equipment in the basement. Be honest with yourself — if you haven't used it by now, you won't use it at the new place either.
Don't Move Broken Things
That chair you've been meaning to fix? The lamp with the wonky switch? The dresser with the stuck drawer? Moving day is your deadline. If it's not fixed by now, it's not getting fixed. Let it go.
Furniture That Won't Fit
Measure your new space before you move. That oversized sectional that barely fits your current living room might not fit through the door at the new place. Save yourself the headache — have it removed before moving day.
Schedule Junk Removal Before Packing
The ideal time to schedule a junk removal pickup is 1-2 weeks before your move. This gives you time to sort, and it means the junk is gone before the movers arrive. Less stuff = faster move = lower moving costs.
